Skipton Food Bank
Started in 2012 food parcels continue to be given to families and individuals who find themselves in difficulties and in need of emergency food.
Food parcels are distributed mainly by local support agencies who recognize the benefits of being able to give practical and immediate assistance to their clients. These clients find that receiving food gives hope and a greater sense of wellbeing. This allows them to be better able to tackle longer-term issues such as employment and debt management.
The Skipton Food Bank service started in 2012 and is now maintained with the help of a paid part-time manager. The Food Bank received Community Grant funding from Craven District Council from April 2014 to March 2016 and was greatly encouraged by their support during that period. The manager ensures food parcels are available across the Craven area and is assisted by an energetic team of unpaid volunteers. These volunteers work hard to process incoming food donations and put together hundreds of food parcels and Christmas hampers every year both for families and individuals.
Donations are given regularly throughout the year by over forty organisations, including many local churches as well as businesses and schools. Skipton Food Bank is grateful for all the generous donations received which help keep up with the steady demand for food parcels. The regular food parcels are somtimes supplemented with fresh fruit and vegetables and bakery products donated by M&S and Tesco from their surplus food that would otherwise go to waste.
