Street Angels Skipton

Street Angels Skipton is

  • for people who want to show practically that they care about and are willing to serve the local community,
  • a ministry led and organised by Churches Together in Skipton and District,
  • a visible presence on the streets of Skipton between 9 pm to 2 am every Saturday evening and some other nights, when assistance is offered to those who have concerns about their health or safety.

Street Angels aim to bring a friendly face to the Town Centre streets, helping to make sure that the evening is as safe as it can be for those:

  • leaving the Cinema, restaurants or pubs,
  • moving between pubs and the night club,
  • waiting for a taxi or bus home,
  • finding themselves unwell or vulnerable.

Trained Street Angels work in partnership with the Police and ambulance service, patrolling the streets, normally in groups of three, wearing high visibility identifiable clothing. We have radio contact with the Police, who are delighted to have us around as are the club, pub, taxi and food outlet managers. Street Angels qualified in First Aid may be able to deal with minor injuries or, if needed, contact the ambulance service.

Mostly we meet and chat to young people out for the evening and are often told that our work is appreciated. Some greet us with handshakes and hugs!! From April 2009, when we started, to the end of 2011 we have picked up over 4400 abandoned bottles and glasses, making the streets safer at night.

As well as the street patrols, there is a central base staffed by Street Angels.

For people on the street who become vulnerable for any reason and need help, friends or family can be contacted, if necessary from the safety and warmth of the Street Angels base. A hot drink can be provided until friends are reunited and/or suitable transport home is arranged by taxi or public transport.

Although led by the local churches and in a response to the good news of the Gospel, this opportunity to demonstrate love in action is open to all who relate to the purpose of Street Angels. Anyone over the age of 18, of whatever faith or none, will be welcome to be considered as a volunteer. Volunteers are trained and fully insured by the organisation.

If you would like to come and meet us to experience a Street Angels evening, please contact us to arrange a visit.

If you feel you'd like to be involved on street patrol or at the base you can apply by printing and completing our application form.
